Unless the Lord builds
the house, they labor in vain who build it
"Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain." Psalms 127:1
A vain thing, that it is of no use or value. This is a verse
that reminds us that every good thing we have comes from the Lord. It is not
just out of own efforts that things work out just right. The Lord makes this
possible. The Lord God is the foundation that matters in everything that we do,
in every choice and decision that we make.
I think of all the effort put and stress that we sometimes experience
while trying to figure something out or trying to make something work; yet
leaving the Lord out of the whole equation. In whichever area of our lives.
This Scripture tells us that if the Lord is not involved, no matter how much
energy or knowledge we put into something, it will fail anyway.
Sometimes we may compromise our faith in Jesus, we will ignore
what the Word of the Lord says, we will take our own direction rather than
follow the will of the Lord. We may think and believe that what we want is what
is best for us, yet it comes with so much stress, a lack of peace and no rest.
I like what Andrew Wommack said in a
video in the article I shared last week In Pursuit of God's Will ; that the pressure you would expect in situations is not
there when we follow the way of the Lord. You know, because we know that we are
not the ones directing things, we are waiting on the Lord. He is in control.
While we are compromising God and using so much vain effort
and energy, we may not realise this; it would have taken less stress and more
peace to experience success in the areas that God has placed us in. This is not
to say that there are no challenges in the way of the Lord, but there is peace
and confidence that it is all good.
The next verse addresses just this; the rest that comes when
our foundation is of the Lord. "It
is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for
so He gives His beloved sleep" Psalms
127:2. Expect rest when your foundation is in the Lord. It is also not encouraging laziness, but advising
against trusting in our own abilities without recognising that it is the Lord
who makes it all possible.
Jesus also taught about the foundation that matters. He taught
about two houses that were built on two different foundations. One on the rock
and the other on sand. While they may have both looked to the eye, when floods
and winds came, the one built on sand fell hard, while the one built on rock
remained.
Which foundation
are our lives built on? Who or what do we look upon?
